Introduction of alien crayfish in the development of crayfish fisheries: experience with signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana)) in Finland and the impact on the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus (L.))
Published Online:
Abstract
Native crayfish -stocks and crayfish fisheries in Europe have suffered badly from the disastrous crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci Schikora) which spread to the European continent in 1860. Although the plague fungus has been present in Europe for over 130 years and there has been intense selection pressure, no resistant strains of the indigenous species have been detected (e.g. Unestam 1969, Svardson 1992). The plague strikes numerous new populations every year.
