The effect of acute cadmium toxicity on marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith, 1912) (Family Parastacidae)
Published Online:
Abstract
The acute toxicity of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) to marron, C. tenuimanus was determined. The 96-hr LC50 value with 95% confidence limits was 17.9 (13.4-23.9) mg L-1 CdCl2. The hepatopancreatic tissue was analysed for cadmium accumulation using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Total accumulation, and rate of accumulation, of cadmium into the hepatopancreatic tissue was dependent on the ambient concentration of cadmium. Water hardness, pH of the water, OCL (orbital carapace length), moult stage and sex of the marron had no significant effect on the amount or rate of cadmium accumulated. The results indicate that C. tenuimanus may be suitable as a bio-indicator for cadmium in Western Australian fresh waters.
