Monitoring a population of Procambarus clarkii (Decapoda: Cambaridae) in São Miguel (Azores, Portugal)

Abstract
The acclimatization and effects of recently introduced species are generally difficult to assess due to the lack of information immediately after the introduction. To assess the adaptation of Procambarus clarkii on a volcanic island (Sao Miguel) a monitoring program was carried out. Several population parameters namely relative abundance, size structure, sex-ratio, biomass, maturation status, and burrow construction were monthly surveyed from January 1995 to June 1996. Generally, P.clarkii seems to be acclimatizing to the new environment, although the population has not grown as rapidly as it might be expected. So far, P.clarkii seems to be restrained to Lagoa do Peixe.
