On the non-existence of an indigenous species of crayfish on the continent of Africa

Abstract
Apart from recent moves to introduce the true crayfish into East African waters (Huner, 1977), there are no decapod crustaceans with the description of the crayfish (Family: Astacidae) on the continent of Africa. The crustaceans that have been wrongly tagged with the name 'crayfish' in Nigeria are none other than the prawns and shrimps which belong to the families Palaemonidae and Atyidae of the sub-order Natantia. Possible explanations for the non-existence of crayfish on continental Africa are given.
