Abstract

Selection of a suitable method for partial restocking of ponds in Morvan and Lorraine with the noble crayfish is the aim of this work which is still being continued. Experimental restocking was attempted with summertings and adults. Temperature and density both affected the growth of summertings and males grew faster than females. The increase in size was so rapid in some ponds that animals exceeded the total length attained by animals of the same age in Northam Europe. Some 1+ females in the fast-growing populations reproduced during their second spring. Density also affected the growth of adults. Reproduction occurred one year after stocking with adults from Finland. Adults from the wholesale market of Paris (Yugoslavian origin?) reproduced immediately after stocking. The offspring grew in one year to a total length comparable to the size of summertings of the same age. Trapping of mates more than 100 mm in total length lead to a yield of 6.2 kg, equivalent to 73 kg ha-1 36 months after stocking with adults.
