Studies on a new method for permanently tagging crayfish with microchip implants
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
A new microelectronic tagging system, developed by Labtrac Ltd., was assessed for its potential use for permanently tagging crayfish. Coded microchips (13x2 mm) were inserted into the cephalothorax with a modified syringe and detected, in air or in water, with a modified decoder with a maximum range of 10 cm. Tagged crayfish >25 mm carapace length showed no significant differences in feeding, moulting, growth rate and behaviour from control animals. Some mortalities occurred in crayfish <=25 mm carapace length.
