Tail length variations among noble crayfish (Astacus astacus (L.)) populations

Abstract
Measurements of several hundred animals show significant differences between the length of the abdomen of males and females on the one hand and between crayfish of both sexes belonging to different populations on the other hand. Males have an abdomen shorter than females and among populations coming from Finland, Germany, Bosnia and France, the length of the abdomen increases. The length of the abdomen of populations coming from the same catchment area (Danube river for animals of Germany and Bosnia) is comparable. More investigations are required to see if these differences are of genetic or phenotypic origin. The practical implications have to be taken into account when stockings of lakes and rivers are undertaken with foreign animals for restoring noble crayfish populations.
