Comparative analysis of reproduction of narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus Esch. (Crustacea, Decapoda, Astacidae), in its eastern area
Published Online:
Abstract
The fecundity of Astacus leptodactylus in 11 localities from Caspian Sea to Karelia has been analyzed. The mating and spawning period varies between October - April according to latitude. Length at first maturity ranges from 6.9-8.5 cm of total length. The ovarian egg number ranges from 84-1628 and the pleopod egg number ranges approximately from 5-820. In all habitats analyzed, the fecundity increased with female size. Among the largest females, the pleopod egg number decreases, a phenomenon occuring more frequently in northern populations. Pleopod egg losses amount to 21-71%.
