Aspects of crayfish biology

Abstract
The mouthparts of Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet) possess a formidable armature of setae. These setae play an important role in the feeding mechanisms employed by the crayfish. Using stereoscan electronmicroscope photographs one is able to relate the distribution and morphology of groups of setae to the capture, and treatment of various types of food material. Microorganisms are found in great profusion in the proventriculus of the crayfish, this can be related to the large amount of vegetable material ingested.
