Ecological and social problems in the use of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii in Kenya

Abstract
The quantity of the tail meat in Procambarus clarkii in Kenya was surveyed in order to arrive at a better assessment of the fishery potential of this species in Kenya. A total of 562 crayfish specimens were caught between 17 March and 20 May, 1978, from Loresho Dam in Nairobi. The average weight of males was 21.6 g and that of females 21.4 g. The amount of tail meat in males varied from 0.5 to 7.0 g (average 2.6 g for the 49 crayfish sampled) and that in females from 0.7 to 10.0 g (average 4.2 g for the 48 crayfish sampled). It was noted that 30% of males and 8.1% of females had clearly diminished amounts of tail muscle . It appears that this condition occurs in all Kenyan populations of P. clarkii. P. clarkii has been successfully introduced into most water bodies of Kenya in the 1960's and 1970's, but due to a number of social and economic factors it has been impossible to start a commercial fishery of crayfish in Kenya. Possibilities of a remedy of this situation are also discussed
