Psorospermium haeckeli, a parasite on the European crayfish, Astacus astacus, found in Finland
Published Online:
Abstract
Psorospermium haeckeli, a parasite not previously observed in Finland, was found in 1975-1977 in the native crayfish Astacus astacus in three lakes. Although the taxonomic status of the parasite is still unclear, it should probably be classified as a protozoon. Oval formed parasites ( 58 ? x 102 ?) were found in nearly all parts of the infected crayfish, especially in the connective tissue surrounding the intestine, blood vessels and nerves, in the musculature and inside the carapace. The structure, frequency of infection and significance of this parasite for crayfish populations is discussed.
