On the reproductive cycle of the crayfish Astacus astacus L. in Finland
Published Online:
Abstract
Astacus astacus were caught from different lakes and rivers in the district of Kuopio, Finland, during the course of the year. The changes in the weight and water content of the gonads were recorded. The peak weight of testes occurs in late June and the vas deferens reach their peak in October, i.e. before or at the copulation. The ovaries attain their highest weight in July through August. The eggs in these populations produced per female are more numerous and their diameter is smaller than in A. astacus populations in both Estonia and southern Sweden.
