Ultrastructure and taxonomic position of the crayfish parasite Psorospermium haeckeli Hilgendorf

Abstract

Two different crayfish species were fed artificial diets with and without supplementation of fresh food, to determine the maintenance and survival of both species of crayfish under laboratory conditions in the absence of natural food. The crayfish P. leniusculus survived and molted successfully with and without supplementation of the artificial diet. On the other hand, A. pallipes fed the diet without supplementation were unable to survive. Dead animals showed symptoms of Aphanomyces disease and hyphae of the crayfish plague fungus (Aphanomyces astaci) were found in these animals when examined at the microscope.
