Effects of formulated diets on two species of crayfish: Austropotamobius pallipes (L.) and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) under laboratory conditions

Abstract

This study compares delta duckpotato (Sagittaria gramineaplatphylla) with rice (Oryza satiya) as forage for use in crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) culture. Eight 0.014 ha ponds, four planted in rice and four in delta duckpotato, were used. Duck potato required midsummer standing water whereas rice was moistened only in the summer. All ponds were flooded in October. Water quality, primary production, and crayf1sh popu1ation dynam1cs and yield were evaluated. Dissolved oxygen, pH, and carbonate alkalinity were higher in duckpotato ponds than in rice ponds. Primary production was much higher in duckpotato ponds in the fall, but differences disappeared after that. Crayf1sh population trends reflected the different hydrologic regimes. Crayfish from the duckpotato treatment were larger and more abundant in the fall; form I crayfish appeared in abundance in November and crayfish growth slowed soon after. Crayfish from the rice treatment matured later. Total yield did not differ significantly between treatments because of the aforementioned treatment-time interaction in crayfish abundance.
