Abstract

Two events took place in 1972 which are of importance for our meeting today and for this paper. One was that in Hinterthal, Austria some of the persons present here met for the first time. There they spoke about the need of relating and interchanging ideas about crawfish as an important part of aquaculture. The other important event of this year for us, was the publication of the book titled 'Aquaculture' written by John E. Bardach (1972). This book was nominated 'as the best Science Book' in 1973. In this book Bardach writes, 'In fact, the nearly worldwide neglect of crayfish by aquaculturists is amazing. Nevertheless, there is money to be made, with hard work, from crayfish farming, and it would seen that crayfish are overdue to assume an important role in aquaculture.'
