Ecology and production of Louisiana red swamp crawfish Procambarus clarkii in southern Spain
Published Online: 1/21/2020
Abstract
A one-year field study (1982-83) on the conditions surrounding the production of Procambarus clarkii documents the physical and chemical restrictions put on this introduced species. Surface and subsurface samples taken in the tidal marshland south of Seville, in both Coto Donana National Park and the rice-growing zone, suggest that soil salinity is the major limiting factor in the expansion of the local range, while food availability is restricting individual growth. Range dynamics for Procambarus near Valencia, Amposta, and Badajoz are documented by maps and estimated production figures.
