Growth, maturity, and fecundity of Astacus astacus in lake Steinsfjorden, S.E. Norway
Published Online: 1/21/2020
Abstract
In the mesotrophic Lake Steinsfjorden the growth curve for the crayfish population was linear within the observed size range. The mean length increment per molt was 9.0 mm for males and 7.8 mm for females. Two molting periods were observed each year in males and immature females, while mature females only molted once. The density of crayfish declined by 38% between 1981 and 1983 due to heavy exploitation. During this period, the proportion of mature females increased from 6.5% to 46.8%, while their size at maturity decreased from 78 to 70 mm. The mean size of pleopod eggs was 2.83 mm. Larger females carried significantly more eggs than smaller females. The numbers of pleopod egg were 55-65% of the ovarian egg number.
