The yield of a heavily exploited population of Astacus astacus in Lake Steinsfjorden, S.E. Norway
Published Online: 1/21/2020
Abstract
The impact of exploitation on the crayfish Astacus astacus was studied during the years 1979-1983. Total trap effort ranged between 135,000 and 168,000 trap-nights, and mean catch varied between 0.8-1.3 crayfish per trap. During late August and September newly molted crayfish, mainly males, were recruited to the fishery and these made up about 30-50% of the total catch. Based on catch per unit effort, the yield was estimated at 109,000 - 188,000 crayfish per year during the study period, corresponding to an exploitation rate of 0.75 - 0.91. The variations in yield were due to year class fluctuations and are probably a result of the heavy exploitation.
