Disease problems during aquaculture of freshwater Crustacea
Published Online: 1/21/2020
Abstract
Diseases of freshwater Crustacea in aquaculture are reviewed. While research has advanced for crayfish, our knowledge of diseases in prawns (Macrobrachium spp.) is more limited. In rearing conditions these decapods are susceptible to diseases caused by different agents: fungi, bacteria, protozoan and metazoan parasites, with epizootics provoked by fungi particularly frequent and double and multiple infections also occurring. The etiology of other syndroms have not yet been accurately determined. Research into the efficiency and safety of chemotherapeutants is limited but is promising, and further work in this field is necessary and urgent.
