Crayfish Procambarus clarkii production under two rice varieties, two levels of nitrogen fertilization, and two crayfish stocking rates
Published Online: 1/21/2020
Abstract
A study was conducted to determine differences in crayfish yields produced by Labelle or Saturn rice (Oryza sativa) as forages fertilized with two levels of nitrogen (26 or 222 kg/ha) and in ponds stocked with either 800 or 1,200 pairs/ha of brood crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The ponds were stocked with crayfish in June, planted to rice in July, and fertilized with urea-N in August. The quantity of rice biomass was determined in September before complete flooding and in May after ponds were drained. Crayfish were harvested by trapping from November through April. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in the quantity of biomass produced between the two rice varieties. Nitrogen fertilization levels and crayfish stocking rates were significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with total weight and number of crayfish caught. Decreasing the nitrogen level from 222 kg/ha to 26 kg/ha increased the crayfish harvest from 183 kg/ha to 403 kg/ha. As stocking rates increased from 800 to 1,200 pairs/ha yield increased from 208 kg/ha to 378 kg/ha.
