The dangers of introducing alien animals with particular reference to crayfish

Abstract
The distribution of animals on the planet is the result of a number of factors, not least their movement from one continent to another by man, either accidentally or deliberately. In many cases such introduced animals have become a problem in their new homes as pests of agricultural land and water, by competing with native species for space and food, and by introducing diseases and parasites. Crayfish are a case in point. The distribution of crayfish in Europe is examined in the light of the spread of crayfish plague and alien introductions from North America. The current situation in the British Isles is outlined including measures for conserving stocks of the native species. The environmental impact which crayfish introductions may have is discussed.
