Abstract

Australian freshwater crayfish have been poorly researched compared with those from most developed countries, and this lack of knowledge had led to a general misunderstanding by the international community as to what the Australian freshwater crayfish fauna consists of. This is particularly so of the larger freshwater crayfish which have come under close scrutiny and extensive promotion by the aquaculture community. This paper is a review of the major economic species of Australian freshwater crayfish with particular reference to their aquaculture potential. The paper focuses on the seven best known freshwater crayfish of Australia:­ Marron (Cherax tenuimanus), Yabbies (Cherax destructor), Tasmanian Spiney Crays (Astacopsis gouldi), Murray River Crays (Euastacus armatus), New South Wales Spiney Crays (Euastacus valentulus), Queensland Spiney Crays (Euastacus hystricosus), and Queensland Marron (Cherax quadricarinatus).
