Habitat partitioning by Australian burrowing crayfish

Abstract

The Australian parastacid fauna includes a number of crayfish which occur well away from open water bodies in burrows, and even a group of species whose burrows do not extend down to the water table. It is common in some areas of Australia to find more than one species of burrowing crayfish coexisting over a scale of lOm or less. In most of these cases it seems that the local topography is the important axis which separates the species. It is suggested that this has been brought about by changes in the Australian climate since the Tertiary.
