The reproductivity of female nobel crayfish Astacus astacus in a northern oligotrophic lake.

Abstract
The reproductivity of the females in the crayfish population of Late Vuorijarvi (61° 39'N, 24° 49'E) was studied on the basis of marking and recapturing of individuals in 1981-83. The females attained sexual maturity at a carapace length of 38-48 mm. most often more than 40 mm. Sixty percent of the mature females reproduced only every second year. Moulting was found to be necessary between two reproductive periods. Based on the necessity of moulting and the growth per moult, it can be assumed that the females in a highly exploited crayfish population will only be able to reproduce once or twice before reaching the minimum, legal catch size, which is a total length of 10 cm in Finland.
