Maturity and fecundity of Astacus astacus females in Norway
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
In six Norwegian crayfish localities the fraction of mature females ranged 8.3-74.0% in 1985. Mean size of mature females was significantly different between populations and varied between 76.3-95.6 mm total-length. Ovarian egg numbers increased with female size and mean number of eggs varied significantly between populations (adjusted for length differences). Ovarian egg means ranged from 94 to 241. In Lake Steinsfjorden the fraction of mature females varied between 6.5-62.1% during 1981-1986. Mean size of mature females varied between 82.6-86.9 mm. Ovarian egg means ranged from 126 to 151 and pleopod egg means from 70 to 88. Neither ovarian nor pleopod egg means varied significantly between years (adjusted for length differences).
