Moulting and growth of the nobel crayfish Astacus astacus in and oligotrophic lake

Abstract
Crayfish population studies have been conducted in Lake Vuorij?rvi (61° 39'N, 24° 49'E) since 1975 The material for this study was collected in 1975 (length/weight relationships) and 1981-84 (marking of individuals). Crayfish for the length and weight measurements, and for marking, were collected and recaptured by trapping; this method makes it possible to evaluate only crayfish with carapaces longer than 34 mm. The % relationship between carapace length/total length (53% in males and 52% in females) is given along with carapace length/total weight regressions (males: ln W = -11.5 + 3.834 ln L; females: ln W = -10.1 + 3.465 ln L). Marted individuals recaptured after moulting provided data for evaluating carapace length growth and total weight increase. The mean increase in carapace length per moult was 5.5 mm for males and 4.5 mm for females. In crayfish of size classes between 34-60 mm carapace length, the weight increase per moult varied respectively from 77% to 44% of initial weight for males and from 54% to 28% for females.
