Chiliped loss in Astacus astacus
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
Chiliped loss ranged from 1.5 to 16.1% in 6 Norwegian crayfish localities, with the higher values coming from localities with low fishing pressure. In Lake Steinsfjorden, chiliped loss ranged from 1.8 to 4.4% during 1981-86, and did not vary with size or sex. Chiliped loss increased among females during late autumn, possibly connected to mating. Chiliped loss was less frequent in traps compared to SCUBA-catches. There was no correlation between chiliped loss and year-to-year variation in density or handling, expressed as last year's trapping effort, whereas the variation in size composition (i.e. the percentage ) 95 mm TL in the trap catches) explained 88% of the observed variation in chiliped loss.
