Comparative studies on strains of Fusarium solani parasitic for crayfish or isolated from other hosts

Abstract
Electrophoretic techniques have been applied to 5 strains of Fusarium solani isolated from crayfish, marine crustacea, insects and plants. The enzymatic properties of these isolates have been analyzed by staining of electrophoretic gels allowing to reveal 8 different isoesterases, and to show significant differences between the strains investigated. Strains El2 and Pacif., both isolated from freshwater crayfish, show a high degree of similarity, but they greatly differ from all the other isolates studied, including Cr., parasitic for a penaeid shrimp. Therefore, the use of biochemical criteria seems to be convenient for the identification of F. solani, at an infraspecific level. However, at this stage of the investigation, no relationship seems to exist between enzymatic pattern of the strains and their virulence or their possible specificity towards their original host. Other investigations are now carried on in order to obtain a more detailed characterization of the strain properties by making use of other enzymatic systems and of more accurate techniques e.g. electrofocusing.
