Infection caused by Fusarium solani in crayfish Astacus leptodactylus

Abstract
Fusarium solani isolated from A. leptodactylus has been recognized as responsible for the 'brown abdomen disease' of this crayfish. The experimental reproduction of the mycosis in artificially wounded A. leptodactylus and P. leniusculus has allowed to demonstrate the importance of the nature of the cuticular lesions and of the wound localization for a successful infection. The mode of penetration of the fungus, together with the modalities of its parasitic development, have been clarified by detailed histological and ultrastructural examinations. Exotoxins, responsible for a lethal toxic activity of F. solani, have also been revealed. They may play an important role in the evolution of the infection in the host.
