Comparative Studies on Crayfish Brooks in Bavaria (Astacus astacus L., Austropotamobius torrentium Schr.)

Abstract
Stocks of native crayfish species Astacus astacus L. and Austropotamobius torrentium Schr. in Bavaria (South Germany) show a patchy geographical distribution and mostly are restricted to more or less isolated areas of the water systems. Crayfish-stocked waters in different regions of the country have been investigated as for the chemical, structural and biological characteristics. Properties of these waters (morphology, current, supply of substrates, aquatic and terrestrial environments) are compared as well as water quality and fish stock in order to characterize the relation between relevant ecological impacts of the waters and the occurrence of crayfish. This work aims at establishing a guide for the selection of waters suitable for restocking, and for restoring waters in order to provide conditions sufficient for the permanent existence of crayfish populations and the typical accompanying aquatic fauna.
