Abstract

Astacus astacus L. could be identified as vector of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) of trout. The freshwater crayfish has been experimentally infected with IPNV via water and food. IPNV persisted in the haemolymph for more than 42 weeks and it was excreted by the freshwater crayfish into the water continuously. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fry and eggs were infected with IPNV by immersing the fish and eggs into the IPNV-contaminated water of the freshwater crayfish. IPNV could be demonstrated in the cytoplasmatic granula of the haemocytes in different organs of the freshwater crayfish by electron microscopy. According to the results Astacus astacus may play a role in the epizootiology of IPN.
