Abstract

There are 4 species belonging to 1 family (Cambaridae) and 2 genera of freshwater crayfish in China. These species are Cambaroides dauricus, Cambaroides similis, Cambaroides schrenckii and Procambarus clarkii. Cambaroides is a genus indigenous to northeastern China. Procambarus clarkii, however, was introduced from Japan in the 1930's. Now it is widely distributed in China and has been found in over 10 provinces. Procambarus clarkii is a dominant species in some freshwater, especially in Tung-Si Hu area in Wuhan. Crayfish is usually polycultured with fish (Cyprinidae) in the same ponds in China. Crayfish production is about 1000-1500 kg per hectare and fish production is about 3000 kg per hectare and more.
