Growth and Development of Juveniles of the Native and Introduced Species of Freshwater Crayfish

Abstract

Experiments, carried out on the signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) juveniles under half-natural conditions, showed that the growth rate of the observed juveniles was very high during the first summer. During 4 months they moulted 8-9 times and averaged 29-34 mm.body length and 560-740 mg body mass. One-summer juveniles of P. leniusculus were 2.5-3 times larger than the juveniles of the same age of the native species Astacus astacus L. and 1.5-2 times larger than those of Astacus leptodactylus Esch. The output of one-summer juveniles of the three species came to 30-60%. The obtained one-summer juveniles can be introduced in isolated lakes of Lithuania.
