Culture of the Australian Freshwater Crayfish Cherax tenuimanus (Marron) in Eastern Australia

Abstract
The culture of marron is attracting increasing interest in Australia. Cherax tenuimanus is a species which enjoys high consumer acceptability and is a prime candidate for culture in intensive and semi-intensive systems. Gravel-lined dams of a commercial farm in Queensland were stocked at varying densities with marron juveniles and fed a commercial fowl pellet. Pond production and the percentage of marketable individuals were determined. Growth rates and the percentage of marketable individuals were highly variable. Over 70% of the cultured marron population attained marketable size (40 g) within a year of grow-out. However, pond management appears to be an important factor in determining the success or failure of the commercial culture of the species.
