Abstract

Two year old signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus leniusculus (Dana) were stocked and monitored over a five year period in an experimental gravel pit in N. W. France. Results concern the dynamics of the new population, inter- and intra-specific competition, the increase of the crayfish-biomass (to 4 individuals m-2 of shore) and the distribution of the stocks in connection with the profile of the pit and the distribution of the habitats. Conclusions recommend the multiplication of the habitats in view of the commercial astaciculture potential in gravel pits.
