Abstract

In order to determine the potential of Lake Bronnen, a 3 ha gravel pit, for crayfish culture it was initially stocked with 21,000 early stage juveniles (1985) and 500 summertings (1986) of Astacus astacus. Due to the low density of fish predators the crayfish population thrived. Although the growth of the A. astacus population was at first exceptional, individual average weight has been decreasing rapidly despite considerable trapping intensity over the last four years. Lack of food and the regulating influence of large-sized crayfish seem to be preventing further growth. However, profit can be made from selling small crayfish for stocking purposes so that it would be wrong to take correctional measures to change the actual situation in the lake.
