Management of crayfish eggs (Pacifastacus leniusculus) for intensification of juvenile production

Abstract

Even though crayfish are usually bred under semi-extensive conditions, intensive culture should be taken into account because of its advantages. The intensification of crayfish breeding includes the improvement of reproductive efficiency and the implementing of artificial incubation methods, as well as the development of egg transport and storage techniques. Our research group has carried out reproductive research on Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet) and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana), which are part of a series of studies on crayfish production and ecology. Initially, the different phases of the embryonic development on both species were studied. This allowed for the setting-up of the appropriate conditions in adequate embryonic phases, and thus high P. leniusculus juvenile production efficiency with maternal incubation was achieved. Later on, these techniques were applied to establish artificial incubation methods from early embryonic phases of P. leniusculus egg stripping. In further research, transport and storage trials of P. leniusculus fertilized eggs have been performed, attaining acceptable juvenile stage 2 survival rates even under long-term storage conditions.
