Experimental fishing of Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet) stocks in an Irish midlands lake
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
The crayfish stocks in Lough Lene, Co. Westmeath, Ireland, became extinct in late 1987 through crayfish fungal plague. In that year trapping over 73 nights yielded a mean CPUE of 2 individuals or 26 g. Mean size was 69 mm total length and 13.1 g; 46% of the catch were males, and about 2% were over 90 mm total length. While September catches were correlated with the lunar cycle, numbers and size of crayfish also declined over time. The experimental fishery was not commercially profitable using 66 traps.
