Status of the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) stocks in Estonia
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
The status of the noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, in Estonia is reviewed. Since the tum of the century stocks have declined due to crayfish plague, overfishing and habitat destruction. A ban on crayfishing was implemented in 1968 but by the 1980s 700-800 licences had been issued and stocks started to decline again. Various attempts are being made to limit catching. Transplantations from strong populations to areas where crayfish have disappeared have been made. In addition, hatcheries for the production of noble crayfish jweniles have been set up.
