The crayfish stock and the state of crayfish breeding in the north-west of Russia
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
Two species of crayfish occur in the north-west of Russia. Astacus astacus and Astacus leptodactylus. Studies on the stocks of A. astacus have been made since the 1960s but few studies have been made on A. leptodactylus stocks. A large proportion of lakes and rivers are occupied by A. astacus, panicularty in the Pskov region and south-west of St. Petersburg. The crayfish have been heavily exploited but no measures have been taken to restore the stocks. An outbreak of crayfish plague in 1987 annilhilated some stocks in the St. Petersburg Region. Pollution is also a threat to many stocks. A number of facilities have been built in recent years for the production of juveniles for on-growing by farmers. It is also intended to give training sessions for those interested in crayfish breeding.
