On physiological responses, plasma glucose, total hemocyte counts and dehydration, of marron Cherax tenuimanus (Smith) to handling and transportation under simulated conditions

Abstract

Impacts of emersion, handling and transport under simulated conditions and recovery after re-immersion were studied on mature, commercial size marron (Cherax tenuimanus). In the emersion experiment, marron were kept out of water for periods of 3 or 6 h and total hemocyte counts (THC), plasma glucose, serum protein and survival were analysed. In the transport experiment, marron were packed in polystyrene boxes according to industry standards and THC, plasma glucose, dehydration and survival were monitored after 1, 4, 8 and 24 h of packing. The temperature inside the foam boxes declined within 5 h to below 15 °C and within 7 h below 10 °C. THC were highest 1 h after packing, remained at that level up to 8 h, and then declined to control levels, while emersion did not affect THC. During transport, plasma glucose was also elevated up to 8 h, after which it declined to control levels, while emersion resulted in slightly increased plasma glucose levels after 6 h. Survival in all groups was 100% after transport and all re-immersed marron survived a 7 d observation period, while 6 h of emersion resulted in decreased survival. Marron lost, on average, 4.5% of their wet body weight during transport. This study showed that transport under practical conditions up to 24 h caused significant secondary stress responses in marron with the stress peak occurring during the first 8 hours and that marron were capable of a recovery during transport and after re-immersion.
