Abstract

Juvenile Cherax quadricarinatus (0.02 g) were raised in individual containers for six weeks in a recirculating system. Crayfish were fed test diets with 23, 33 and 43% crude protein. After six weeks, mortality rates ranged from 13 to 20% and were not different between treatments. Final weights ranged from 1.18 g for the 23% protein to 3.66 g for the 43% protein diet. Crayfish fed the 33 and 43% protein diets were significantly larger than those fed the 23% protein diet. Breakpoint analysis indicated protein requirements may be as low as 28%; however, the higher growth rates observed with the high protein diet may encourage the use of the higher protein diets since time of use in indoor nurseries is short.
