Abstract

In this study we investigated the current distribution of crayfish populations in brooks, rivers and ponds in the city of Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg, Germany). Seventy sites have been examined in 1996 and 1997; crayfish (Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus, Austropotamobius torrentium) have been found at 16 sites. A. astacus and A. leptodactylus populations stemming from introduced stock were present in three of the ponds; the autochthonous A. torrentium was documented for 13 running water sites. A. torrentium populations were found only in unpolluted headwater sections of forest areas and were usually isolated and often separated by habitat destruction and barriers such as dams and weirs.
