Culturing the marvellous marron in Western Australia: 1967 – 1997
Published Online:
Abstract
Noel Morrissy retired from Fisheries Western Australia in 1997 after 30 years of marron and other freshwater research. He gives a popular account of his ecological background before coming to Western Australia, the surprise of finding the unique recreational marron fishery, his growing concern over the health of the unusual rivers, and the avenues that he explored before eventually developing a successful, commercial form of marron farming. He uses this opportunity to speak of several major challenges in crayfish research. Finally, he describes the satisfaction of mentoring and handing over to a younger generation.
