The program for restocking noble crayfish (Astacus astacus L.) in middle-east Poland

Abstract

Restocking in 1999 and 2000 of noble crayfish in selected fresh waters of Poland concentrated on small selected rivers of Lubelska upland and Mazowiecka lowland. Criteria adopted in selecting the rivers were: water pH (>6.5), calcium concentration (>40 mg L-1), and low nutrient status; limited scope for pollution from agriculture and industry in the catchment basin; the presence of an array of indicator species of aquatic fauna; and the lack of both autochthonous populations of noble crayfish and of alien crayfish species. The crayfish used in the restocking program were transferred from the natural waters of south-eastern Poland. Crayfish for the program originated from three rivers of Lubelska upland, a region where alien crayfish species are still absent. In all, 7500 adult crayfish, weighing between 35-45 g (299.9 kg total biomass) and of a length of 90-100 mm, were released in this restocking program. Preliminary assessment indicates successful restocking of noble crayfish in six rivers. Success of the program will be assessed in 2001/2002 and in subsequent years.
