Published Online:
Abstract
The genus Cambarus dominates the crayfish fauna of the Cumberland Plateau and Cumberland Mountains sections (collectively referred to as the Cumberlands) of the Appalachian Plateaus province. This area is inhabited by the most primitive members of the genus -- C. bouchardi, C. obeyensis and C. pristinus -- and a number of endemic species. One nominal species of Fallicambarus and 25 of Cambarus occur in the Cumberlands as follows: F. fodiens, C. bartonii, C. bouchardi, C. d. diogenes, C. distans, C. dubius, C. extraneus, C. graysoni, C. girardianus, C. hamulatus, C. jonesi, C. latimanus, C. obeyensis, C. obstipus, C. parvoculus, C. pristinus, C. robustus, C. rusticiformis, C. sphenoides, C. striatus, C. tenebrosus, C. unestami, C. veteranus, C. buntingi, C. crinipes and C. cumberlandensis. Included in the annotated list are the range and habitat of these species in the Cumberlands together with notes on their systematic status and geographical distribution. The subspecies C. bartonii carinirostris and C. b. cavatus are synonymized with C. bartonii.
