Abstract

In south eastern and central Australia aboriginal groups have traditionally used the common name yabby for freshwater crayfish. However, taxonomic studies have shown that these crayfish actually represent a number of Cherax species. This has led to considerable confusion and debate. There are four main factors that have contributed to this: 1) The use of the common name 'yabby' for a number of species; 2) the different techniques used by researchers to classify Cherax species; 3) the failure of some researchers to include type strains in their taxonomic studies; and 4) confusion about the type location of the species. This review examines the evolution and current status of the taxonomy of these crayfish and makes recommendations to address current concerns.
