Population studies on the crayfish Astacus astacus L. in the River Pyhäjoki, Finland
Published Online:
Abstract
Density of the crayfish (Astacus astacus L.) population and some environmental factors correlating with it were studied at the upper course of River Pyhäjoki, western Finland. Density estimates by the mark-recapture method of the crayfish of 70 mm or more in body length varied between 0.13-1.65 individuals per square meter. Highest densities were obtained in areas having gravel and stony bottoms. The effects of dredging on crayfish are also discussed.
