Behavioural thermoregulation and critical limits applied to the culture of red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (Von Martens)

Abstract

The final preferendum determined by acute method in juveniles of red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus acclimated to five temperatures was 28.7ºC. The lower avoidance temperature of juveniles was 11.7 ºC, while upper avoidance temperature was 35.1ºC. The responses to thermal stress determined in juveniles of red claw crayfish, showed that the acclimation temperatures influenced the thermal resistance of the organisms; because while the acclimation temperature was increased, the end point of the critical thermal maximum (CTMax) were 36ºC, 38ºC, 40ºC and 42ºC. The acclimation response ratio was between 0.33 and 0.66. The thermal preference of C. quadricarinatus, presented an area of 225.8ºC2 in the thermal tolerance polygon. The specific thermal response (STR) had a cover index of 59.3% for the locality of Mulege, Baja California Sur México. With the results obtained in the present work we recommended to culture C. quadricarinatus juveniles in waters with temperature ranges between 11.7 and 35.1°, being the optimum 29°C in Baja California, México.
