Abstract

Crayfish culture pond (0.1 ha) was divided into three ecological strata: pond edge, 2.4 m from the pond perimeter; near shore, 3.0 m from the pond edge and the pond centre. Crayfish abundance was estimated with a 1.0 m2 throw net (n=3) in each ecological stratum after reflooding (October), winter (January), spring (March), prior to harvest (April) and at harvest end (May). Vegetative biomass estimates which were similar among the three ecological strata, decreased significantly from reflooding through the production season. The crayfish population consisted of young-of-the-year (YOY) and carryover (CO) individuals. No statistical difference was observed in CO crayfish abundance among ecological strata or sampling times. In contrast, YOY abundance varied significantly with strata, sampling time and the interaction term. The YOY abundance, which was the highest along the pond edge after reflooding, was more uniformly distributed among the other ecological strata during the remainder of the production season. Growth and survival of YOY crayfish was the highest when food and substrate were available and lowest when these resources were limited.
